Get Organized!

Organize_image Most of us don’t have the luxury of the perceived hours it takes to organize everything in our life that needs it—those over-flowing closets, garages, home offices, kitchen ‘catch all’ drawers, living rooms or spaces, sheds—the list could go on and on!

However, most of us can find 10 minutes a day to go ahead and attack an organizing project. Below are hints and tips on how to organize almost everything in your life on only 10 minutes a day:

Closet Organization

Closet look like a bull dozer hit it? Clothes on the floor, boxes crammed in between everything else? You’d be surprised what only 10 minutes will do for your closet. Procrastination—or how to avoid it—is often the key here.

Go ahead! Pick something up. Put it on a hanger. Continue. Repeat. You’d be surprised how much you can actually organize in only 10 minutes time. Work from left to right, like you would when writing, grouping clothing or items together in a way that works for you. Some prefer a color organizing scheme, others, perhaps, organization by the type of item it is—skirts on one side of the closet, tops and slacks on the other.

At the end of 10 minutes, survey how much you’ve actually accomplished with your closet re-organization. The results may surprise you. Make the commitment to tackle it for 10 minutes every day, and by the end of the week, the cumulative effect should equal a well-organized closet.

Home Office Organization

If you are like most people, you have more paper than you know what to do with. Even self proclaimed neatniks have a problem with figuring out how to deal with this bane of the home office reorganization.

The key to handling too much paper, however, is as simple of 10 minutes of your time everyday.

Instead of tossing those bills and that junk mail into a basket to be looked at later, take the time—rarely more than 10 minutes—to open each envelope when you receive it, checking and filing each piece to be dealt with immediately. This will eliminate the cluttered desk and give your home office an ‘organized feeling’ that you will enjoy working in.

Garage Organization

This is a tough one. Even for those of us with spotless and clutter-free homes, the garage is often the catch-all for large items that are never used.

How to organize around your vehicle in 10 minutes per day? First, invest your time in creating an E-bay account in a 10-minute time period. Then, concentrate on getting rid of the things you can do without that are leading to a disorganized garage space. Choose one item per day, listing it on E-bay for sale.

At the end of a week or month, you will not only have a more fully-organized garage, but a fatter bank account as well.

Kitchen Organization

Every home chef has one. The disorganized kitchen junk drawer. You know the one with those spatulas you never used, the assorted screws, tooth pick holders, old tin foil, and plastic dishes thrown in disarray on the left hand kitchen cabinet? The junk drawer.

The trick to this is a little commitment, and also the ability to let go. Go ahead! Toss that tin foil. Who is really going to use it, anyway? Buy some fresh stuff. Buy a plastic organizing tray with sections or partitions in it, which can be found at any discount store. Instead of just throwing things in the drawer, take a few minutes to order or group small items—tacks in one section, for example, rubber bands in another. Large items, not easily lost, can take up their own space in the drawer.

This project, though often overlooked, is small enough to actually take up only ten minutes of your time, so congratulate yourself on an organization project that has been completed.
